hmmm, for gimp (me screach head),
open the image, im almost sure that gimp has layers ?
then duplicat the original layer 2 or more times,
make the color manipulation with levels command or curves command,
or hue/saturation command.
then looke for somthing like leyer composition (or a like),
i think it should have meny options for composition.
you will have to trial and error some, to get your desired effect.
as for layer masks, gimp must have them,
this mask is like if you cover a picture with a paper, then cut a portion of it to revel the picture under.
im sry that my knowlage with gimp is low :)
hope this help a bit.
awesome day my friend

hey Vasi :)
thank you my friend,
this photo was saved as raw file as i usually do,
then i opend it with photoshop, edit in 32 bit mode,
i then make 3 different layers,
one layer i darken the image as much as i can,
second layer i over expose the image to get highlights,
the last layer i change the white balance to about 8300 degrees
color tempeture, this extract more redish colors to the image.
after that i duplicat the last layer (redish) and desaturate it to complite grey scale.
then i use layer mask to clean the lower part and live the grey only for top part :)
that about it :)
